Kiln Firing Service Information

I offer a kiln firing service from my garden studio in Nantwich, Cheshire, for potters who don't have access to a kiln of their own.

I can accommodate bisque, glaze and bespoke firings, including decal and onglaze lustre firings. Please read the information below before booking.

Prices

  • Bisque firing: £40

  • Glaze firing: £40

Each firing costs £40, so a bisque firing followed by a glaze firing costs £80.

The price includes energy, loading and unloading, monitoring the firing, and wear and tear on the kiln and shelves.

IMPORTANT: Each booking is for a full kiln firing not individual shelf space.

Kiln Specifications

Kiln: Rohde Ecotop 43 top-loading kiln

  • Internal dimensions: 400mm high × 340mm diameter.

  • Shelf diameter: 350mm.

  • Allow approximately 25mm clearance at the top and bottom.

Firing Temperatures

I can fire to the following temperatures:

  • Bisque

  • Earthenware

  • Stoneware, up to 1280°C

  • Decals and onglaze lustres

As each booking is for a full firing, I can discuss bespoke firing requirements with you. Please get in touch if you have any questions about your work or the temperature required.

Preparing Your Work

Before bringing your work to the studio, please ensure that:

  • All pieces are completely dry and bone dry.

  • Sculptural work is hollow.

  • You can provide details of the clay and glaze used, so that the appropriate firing temperature can be established.

  • Glazed pieces arrive already glazed, with all bases free of glaze.

  • Pieces with glazes that may run are supplied with suitable ceramic cookies.

  • You supply your own stilts where required for earthenware firing.

If you're unsure about preparing your work, please ask before your booking.

What I Cannot Fire

For safety reasons, I cannot accept:

  • Solid pieces liable to explode during firing. Sculptural work must be hollow.

  • Work containing armatures or combustible materials, including bubble wrap, polystyrene, cardboard, wood, organic materials or paperclay that may produce smoke or harmful fumes.

  • Glass.

All work must be suitable for the intended firing temperature.

Booking and Payment

Please use the contact button to enquire about a firing, including details of the work you would like fired.

Turnaround times depend on how busy the kiln is, so please enquire in advance, particularly if you need an urgent firing.

We can agree a date for you to drop off your work.

Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card, or Apple Pay at drop off.

Work must be dropped off and collected by arrangement. I do not offer a postal service. If you live locally to Nantwich and have difficulty transporting your work, please ask whether I can help.

The studio address will be provided once your booking has been arranged.

Important Information

Ceramics can be unpredictable, and work may crack, break or explode during firing for a variety of reasons. I cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss arising during the firing process.

If something goes wrong, I am happy to help you identify possible causes and discuss how to reduce the risk in future.
